The Last Voyage of the Lusitania

Based on the video we watched in class and the link in the title above, post on the following:

1. Why did Germany torpedo the Lusitania, a civilian vessel?

2. Why did such a large ship sink so fast?

3. What have you discovered about social class divisions in 1915 (based on the video and the link provided)?

4. What stands out for you, either emotionally or factually, after watching this video? Why?

1. The Germans claimed it was an accident and that it was carrying arms.

2. It sank very quickly because it had transverse bulkheads and longitudinal bulkheads. Rather than just a hole in one area, several bulkheads were filled with water very quickly causing it to sink so fast. That is a very similar incident to the Sinking of the Titanic.

3. After watching the video it is hard to tell what the social divisions were because it only shows very nice and high quality possessions. The people shown on board are very well dressed and look to be very wealthy.

4. What stands out to me the most after watching the video is how everyone is so amazed and excited in the beginning and have know idea what is going to happen. It is terrible that there was nothing that could be done for them. Also another thing that stands out is how everything in the video is very high class and it seems as if it only portrays high class and wealthy people.

1. The Germans thought that it was carrying weapons and ammo which it was.
2. It sank so quick because when the torpedo hit, it caused another explosion which made more holes which caused it to sink faster.
3. The social divisions where that the lowest class was not even supposed to speak to the other classes.
4. What stands out to me is that the people didn't that boarded the ship didn't know that they were in any danger at all. Also the people that knew that there was weapons and ammo got so furious when the Germans said that they would attack any ship carrying weapons

OK, guys, I'm talking about the Lusitania video WE WATCHED IN CLASS, not the one on top here.

1. They said they attacked it because it was carrying weapons and such.

2. When the torpedo hit the liner it caused an explosion, that explosion caused another explosion therefore making it sink twice as fast as it probably would have if there wasn't a second explosion.

3. Class division was there, but not necessarily as prominent. Some of the people on the Lusitania weren't the richest, but they still got to experience the "magic" of it. They probably weren't treated as well as higher classes were, but it was still semi-equalish.

4. The people that they got to talk really stood out to me. I mean some of those people never got to meet their parents or siblings because of this. Some people were off to start their lives, and some of them never got the chance. It was just really sad. :(

1. I think the German might have thought that there were bombs and missle on board

2.when the missle hit it may have caused a second explosion in the ship making water rush in faster because it made a bigger hole.

3.That the higher you are in the social classes you got priority with the life boats because it showed nicer dressed people on the life boats

4. It is shocking but true if something like that happened every one would brake outin chaos like in the movie.

1. The Germans thought the Lusitania was carrying weapons, ammunition and explosives to Britain-->which was totally illegal.

2. The ship only took about 20 minutes to sink because of the cargo being carried inside of the ship. Most think that 2 torpedoes hit the ship and that the second one hit where the explosives were being held. Others think that the 2nd torpedo never really hit but that the explosion was from the explosives on board the ship.

3. They were just as obvious as they are today. Mostly wealthy people rode on the Lusitania and any other trans-Atlantic vessel for that matter. There were some poor people on the ship though, they were interviewed in the video but obviously didn't recieve as much generosity on the trip, especially after the torpedo hit.

4. What suprises me is that first off, the US would actually risk innocent lives by putting weapons on board of a passenger ship being sailed in dangerous territory. Also, that none of the passengers really seemed to care that they were traveling in international waters during a huge world war. Obviously none of them payed attention to the notices printed in newspapers being the ship left.

* The Germans say that they belivved Lusitania was carrying ammo.
* The people in the movie thot the there was a secong explosion by the coal dust.
* The classes were divided. wealthy were at the top of the sip and the first to get in the boats, while the lower class were at the bottom.
* Im shocked that the one explosion could cause such a big ship to sink so fast...this is why i do believe there had to be another explosion at sometime.

1. Why did Germany torpedo the Lusitania, a civilian vessel?

The Germans thought that there were weapons on bored.

2. Why did such a large ship sink so fast?

It sunk so fast because the explosives that were on board. Either the missile that the Germans fired hit the explosives or the explosives just went off.

3. What have you discovered about social class divisions in 1915 (based on the video and the link provided)?

The wealthier people got on the raft boats sooner than the others.

4. What stands out for you, either emotionally or factually, after watching this video? Why?

I think what is shocking the most is that explosives were actually put on the ship. It's sad to think that the US would put all those people life in danger.

1. They thought the Lusitania was carrying weapons.

2. It sank quickly because the torpedo caused a second explosion, which made the water fill the boat faster.

3. The rich people got priority and were kept separate from the poor people. More rich people survived because they were put on lifeboats first.

4. I don't understand why the Lusitania would risk putting weapons on the ship when the Germans said they would sink any ship that was a threat of war. There was no need for them to risk so many lives.

1) the germans thought that they were cariing weapons and ammo.
2)When the missels hit the ship, they thought it caused a second explosion, which made the ship sink faster.
3)The classes were divided, and the richer people on the ship got to get to the life boats faster than the poor people at the bottom of the class division.
4)It shocked me the most that the people on board didnt even know that there were ammo and missels on board. they had no idea that they were in any danger at all.

1. They tought that there was weapons on board.

2.It sank quickly because it hit the coal int he boat that cuased an explosion through the other side of the boat.

3. The people at the bottom of the boat were lower class. Whe the boat sink, the wealthier people got to life boats faster because they were closer to the top of the ship.

4.The thing that most stand out for me is that there were so many innocent people on the boat. In the video it showed real life stories from people that were actually there which was interesting.

1. The Germans torpedoed the Lusitania because the believed the were carrying war supplies for the soldiers in Europe.

2. The Lusitania is believed to have sunk so quickly because when the torpedo hit, it struck one of the coal reserves thus igniting the remaining coal dust creating a larger second explosion further widening the initial hole created by the torpedo.

3. There was of course a distinct social division. The lower class wasn't treated with as much concern as the wealthier passengers. This became further evident during the evacuation. The wealthy were given priority in life boats and such, over the lower class.

4. What shocked me the most about this whole event is that American vessels were warned that any ship suspected of carrying war supplies would be fired on without warning yet they still attempted to smuggle them on board a civilian vessel.

1. The Germans wanted to control the seas. They did not want supplies shipped freely to the troops. They claimed it was and accident. Believe what you wish.

2. It sank quickly because of the second explosion. No one can completely explain the reason for the second, but it is believed that the Lusitania was carrying explosives. But, the second explosion caused a larger hole, and sank the ship faster.

3. This video shows that only the wealthy could afford the voyage. It is comparable to a modern day cruise ship. You had to be of some high social class to afford the Lusitania.

4. What amazed me the most was the carelessness of the Germans. They nonchalantly fired the torpedo and went along their business. It was almost as if they did not care that they killed hundreds of people.

1. The germans thought the ship had weapons one it, which ended up being true.

2. It sank so fast because once the torpedo hit the ship it caused an explosion, and most people think the coal dust caused a second explosion, making the ship sink faster.

3. The rich people and the poor people were sepearated on the ship. More rich people survived because they got priority over the life boats.

4. I just can't believe that innocent people died when they had no idea they were even in danger. Everyone in the video seemed so happy. Its sad.

I actually did it!!

1. The Germans fired at the Lusitania because they believed it was carrying arms and ammo that could potentioally be a threat towards Germany. And also, didn't the Germans just issue like a warning saying they would open fire at any threat in the water? And the passengers on board were never even informed of the potential danger.

2. That is still sort of a mystery. Many people believe that the Lusitinia was carrying other weapons and ammo that was never recorded, and when the torpedo hit it caused the secret stash to blow up too. But it could have also been that the torpedo hit where the coal was stored and then that explosion caused other holes in the ship that caused it to sink faster.
3. I didn't think the social classes stood out as much to me. For example in the Titanic, although that sounds stupid, you could def. see a huggggeeeee social class division. But in this movie, class ranking was not really spoken of much to me. Besides that super duper rich guy that was on board, i think that it was pretty equal. Obviously some people got treated differently like by waiters, but nothing way too prominent.

4. A couple of things stand out for me. I think that the fact that the people on board didn't even have the slightest idea that they were in danger because of the germans open fire thing and the fact that there was untold weapons on board. I think the minds of people would have changed alot to not going if they had been aware of the circumstances. And i think that it is so not fair that people that had NOTHING to do with the war whatsoever, just average people, got their lives taken away because the German's suspected danger.

A couple of comments:

1) One could argue that the Germans had no choice except to "sink first and ask questions later." The greatest strength of the U-boat as a weapon was the element of surprise. Once surprise was lost, vessels like the Lusitania were far too fast for U-boats to catch. In addition, once a U-boat surfaces, it is extremely vulnerable. This was especially true once Britain started arming merchant ships (as the US would do, later).

2) Do you think it would have made a difference whether or not the German Sub commander knew their were weapons on board? I would think not. They had proclaimed the area around Britain a "war zone," and they reserved the right to sink any British ship in that zone. That doesn't make the sinking of a civilian passenger ship morally right. However, one of the points of this exercise is to point out how this war (unlike many previous wars) affected and touched the lives of everyday people.

3) One question I have is the morality of the British using passengers as, effectively, "human shields" for the transport of weapons. On the other hand, if the existence of your nation is a stake, how far would YOU go to win a war? How do we reconcile our democratic principles with war, conquest, and killing? Is there such thing as a just war? These are some of the questions we will talk about in our WWII and Cold War units.

1) because they thought there was explosive cargo on board
2) the ship sunk is about 18 min. people believe that the torpedo triggered the cargo on board to blow up and thats what caused it to sink so fast.
3)the rich people would get the nicer rooms and they could eat in the nice dinning rooms and such. the poor peoples rooms were on the lower levels.
4)it just blows my mind that so many people were lost. its just horrible. also it kind of pisses me off that america actually put explosives on the ship during war time.

1. The Germans supposedly thought that the Luistania was carrying explosives, supplies, and Weapons to Britain

2. Because the torpedo created two explosions, creating multiple holes towards the front of the ship, therefore making it sink faster

3. Only the wealthier people got to board the ships since lots of valuables were found on board

4. How such a large, impressive, and expensive cruise liner could have sunken so fast and taken so many people down with it. Its just mindblowing.

1. The germans suspected there were weapons onboard the ship.

2. It sank because of the second explosion which caused a bigger hole to make it sink faster.

3. Basically the wealthy were able to afford the voyage.

4. The fact that the innocent people onboard the Lusitania suffered due to something the didn't have a idea about.

1. The Germans didn't want the Lusitania carrying weapons or explosives to Britain, and that's what the Germans believed they were doing.
--
2) People think that two torpedoes hit the ship, causing it to sink in less than 20 minutes, while others believe two torpedoes never hit the ship.
--
3) Many rich people were on board and most of the attention went to them, but some poor people were on it to (probably not getting the respect as the richer people).
--
4) I know that if I read signs saying possible sinking of a boat, I would NOT get on it. How crazy do you have to be to not care?! but anyways, why would you sail a ship, with 1200 people on it, and risk all their lives?

1. The Lusitania was carrying war ammunition over to the other Allies from the U.S.

2. The lusitania sank quickly because of an explosion of coal dust in the bottomof the boat.

3. in the movie you can tell that social class divisions were very strict and very prejudice.

4. The most surprising thing to me is that there are still unclaimed bodies. not even double digit numbers but three digits. Hundreds of people who have still not been "found' to this very day.

1. The Germans said that the Lusitania was carring weapons & posed a threat to their country .

2. It sank so quickly because the torpedo hit the room where they kept the coal & coal dust is very flammable therefore; it caused an explosion which made even more holes in the ship .

3. Mostly wealthy people boarded the Lusitania, however, not every one on The Lusitania was extremely wealthy. But the poorer people were kept in a different part of the ship.

4. What stands out the most to me, is the fact that some people boared the ship complelty oblivious to the fact that the ship was in danger, and that it was going to be struck by a German torpedo.
